The Land of Smiles is also home to some excellent diving sites. The best diving can be had to the west of the country, in the Andaman Sea, especially in the Similan Islands, rated as one of the 10 dive destinations in the world. Lying about 100km north-west of Phuket, the islands where declared a National Park in 1982. And rightly so; its warm, clear water offers fabulous marine landscapes characterised by giant underwater boulders, fabulous marine landscapes, narrow passage and natural caves, over 500 species of corals and amazing aquatic life including leopard sharks, guitar rays, whale sharks, manta rays and turtles .
While the East Coast of Similan features fairly relaxed diving through hard coral reefs with weak currents and good visibility, its West Coast is much more challenging, with variable current and unknown depths. Gliding through incredible submarine formations with swimthroughs and giant fan corals, however, more than makes up for it.
